Gloabl Experience

Currently: For a little over a year, I have been working on creating a program for my church which is aimed towards helping college students better understand missions in a holistic perspective. This will include an international experience this coming Summer 2020, in which we will travel to Basel, Switzerland, Berlin, Germany, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  Learn more about World Engagement Fellows here

In middle school I began to be fascinated with travel and learning about other cultures when I discovered National Geographic. My parents bought me my first subscription and I always looked forward to flipping through the stories and admiring the photos, hoping to one day experience those cultures for myself. I went out of the country for the first time when I was 13 on a mission trip to Honduras with my church.

In high school I took four years of Spanish language and enjoyed conversing with my friends in a different language as well as learning about the colorful cultures of many Latin American countries. I was able to put some of that Spanish into practice when I travelled to the Dominican Republic with a group from my school my junior year.

After graduating from high school I decided to take a gap year and I travelled with a six month long Immersion program to Haiti, Jamaica, and Belize, living with host families and learning about their cultures. You can learn more about my experience living in the Caribbean here.

In college I majored in Global Studies,  concentrating in the Middle East and international politics. I chose the Middle East because it is the birthplace of three major religions and it is teeming with cultures that I want to learn more about. Not to mention the food is delicious! It is also a place that has been center stage in the news for many years. I have taken two years of Arabic language, and I hope to one day have the opportunity to be immersed so that I can become fluent.

I hope that whatever work I end up doing is internationally focused, or that I have the opportunity to live and work and another country at some point. I want to continue to learn about other cultures, and help others to learn how to engage with different languages and cultures as well.
